Peanut Butter Medicine
Pacius’s cousin, Dr. Grenson Jeune, has created peanut butter made with local resources and ingredients fortified with mango juice. For the malnourished child, the sweet taste of sugar cane juice makes the mixture irresistible and is eaten where other supplements might be rejected. Medika Mamba (“peanut butter medicine” in Haitian Creole) is the gold standard treatment for severe acute malnutrition.
Several months ago, students in Alabama collected $1,000 to purchase peanut butter to distribute to Haitian children in the mountains. Many of the younger children’s only meal of the day is their noon meal, so the peanut butter gift is a boost!
In the future, our medical team will have a source of “peanut butter medicine” to care for our severely malnourished children. Thanks to Dr. Jeune and to all those who donated!
